When Emperor Eddard III disappears without leaving an heir, the Daughters of the Night prophesy a millennium of chaos: it is the beginning of the Dark Ages. In Malicorne, Asterion, a cursed child with black blood, unleashes the crowds by announcing the return of the Serpent. A double solar eclipse will last a whole month, while the Mad Wind sweeps the Kingdoms. The whole of Ylluria rises up and proclaims its independence. The monastery of Malicorne is attacked, the monks massacred and the Veil of Tear is lost. The other kingdoms join forces and form the largest army in living memory. They set out on a crusade to once again root out the Heresy from the heart of Cepheus. For twenty years, Ylluria resists but Asterion is finally defeated in the battle of the Purple Marshes. He is judged and dies at the stake. The Kingdoms refuse to restore the Empire and a precarious peace is established.
